When I was a kid, Mom used to joke that our Christmas tree was equal opportunity, and I distinctly remember a one-legged Pinocchio ornament making the cut. Most homes aren’t that forgiving — but while the so-so decorations don’t make it out for display, they do tend to stay in the box, year after year.
Since we just wrapped up the holiday season, now is the prime time to evaluate what decorations you still value, and what you want to declutter.
For today’s challenge, get rid of any shoddy items you didn’t put up this year, including broken ornaments and strands of holiday lights that don’t work. If you didn’t want it up this year, chances are you won’t want it next year, either.
Don’t waste time or energy agonizing over sentimental items. Instead, focus on eliminating anything that’s in poor condition, or items that you no longer love. (If your space is particularly small, you may want to get rid of decorations altogether. Check out our post on using minimalist, natural holiday decor instead.)
Consider this challenge a gift to yourself for next holiday season. You’ll be happy you took the time to pare down next year, when you unpack a box full of beloved items that are in good condition.
